Why subtitles become out of sync

A subtitle file can contain accurate dialogue and still be timed for a slightly different version of a video. An added intro, removed scene or different edit can leave every cue consistently offset.

The important question is whether the error stays roughly the same throughout the video or becomes progressively worse.

Late subtitles versus early subtitles

If you hear the dialogue first and the matching caption appears afterward, the subtitles are late and need to move earlier.

If the caption appears before you hear the matching dialogue, the subtitles are early and need to move later.

How to synchronize subtitles with a global shift

Find a clear line of dialogue and estimate how far its subtitle is from the correct moment. Upload the SRT or VTT file to the Subtitle Time Shifter, choose the direction and apply that offset to the entire file.

Download the shifted file and test it at several points in the video rather than checking only the opening minute.

  • Find a recognizable spoken line.
  • Measure whether its caption is early or late.
  • Apply the same offset to the subtitle file.
  • Test the beginning, middle and end of the video.
  • Keep the original file until the correction is confirmed.

When a simple shift works

A global shift is appropriate when the subtitle error is consistent. If captions are about two seconds late near the beginning and still about two seconds late near the end, moving all timestamps by the same amount makes sense.

When a simple shift does not work

If the subtitles begin in sync but become increasingly early or late as the video continues, the problem is timing drift rather than a fixed offset. Moving every cue by one constant amount will not fully solve it.

Likewise, if only a handful of cues are wrong, edit those individual cues rather than changing the timing of the entire file.
